Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics drives 40 percent surge in business jet activity
The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics has driven a sharp rise in business aviation activity, with data showing nearly a 40 percent increase in business jet departures across Northern Italy during the event period.

Airports serving Milan and surrounding regions experienced significant demand as corporate sponsors, executives, athletes and high net worth travellers relied on private aviation for time-sensitive mobility. Secondary airports also saw increased utilisation as operators sought to avoid congestion at primary hubs and maintain schedule flexibility.

The surge highlights a consistent trend where major global events generate concentrated spikes in business jet traffic. Around 884 departures were recorded during the Olympic window, reinforcing the sector’s ability to scale rapidly in response to high demand travel periods.

Such peaks often lead to increased aircraft repositioning, extended crew rotations and tighter slot coordination. Charter brokers and fractional providers typically report elevated bookings weeks in advance, reflecting the planning intensity required to support large-scale international events.

The Milan-Cortina uplift also reinforces business aviation’s role as a critical enabler of global events, offering flexibility, privacy and direct airport access that commercial travel cannot match. As demand patterns continue to align with major sporting and political gatherings, event-driven traffic remains a key driver of growth across the sector.
