FAA Launches SMART Predictive Airspace Tool to Anticipate Traffic Congestion Before It Develops
The FAA and U.S. Department of Transportation have begun the soft launch of a predictive air traffic management platform designed to identify demand-and-capacity imbalances before they develop into operational problems. Known as Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories, or SMART, the system will initially be used around Washington, D.C.

The technology is intended to give traffic managers greater ability to anticipate airspace constraints rather than reacting after congestion has already developed. That matters to business aviation because airspace restrictions, reroutes, ground-delay programs and traffic-management initiatives can quickly affect private aircraft schedules even when departure and destination airports remain operational.

The development is especially significant to NVOII because predictive airspace management represents a practical application of advanced data technology within the infrastructure supporting everyday flight operations. If the initial deployment proves effective, tools capable of anticipating congestion could eventually improve route planning, system resilience and operational predictability across increasingly busy U.S. airspace.
