AI Bird-Strike Prevention Technology Could Give Business Aviation Airports New Tools to Reduce Wildlife Risk
Artificial intelligence is emerging as a potential new tool for reducing bird-strike risk at business aviation airports, with technology capable of combining wildlife detection, movement patterns and predictive analytics to give airport operators a more dynamic picture of threats around runways. NBAA highlighted the developing technology on September 14 as the industry examines new approaches to a longstanding aviation safety problem.

Traditional wildlife management relies on measures including patrols, habitat management and dispersal techniques. AI-enabled systems could supplement those methods by processing information from cameras, radar and other sensors to identify patterns that may be difficult for humans to recognize continuously, potentially allowing airport teams to intervene before wildlife reaches a critical operating area.

For NVOII, the significance lies in AI moving from business aviation scheduling and customer-service applications into physical flight-safety infrastructure. Bird strikes remain a risk to turbine aircraft during takeoff and landing, and technology that improves early detection could be particularly valuable at high-utilization business aviation airports where frequent movements increase exposure.
