Air Traffic Control Providers Accelerate AI and Automation Upgrades as Aviation Infrastructure Modernizes
Air navigation service providers are accelerating major upgrades to air traffic management infrastructure, including increased use of automation and artificial intelligence to support controllers and enable more distributed operations. Aviation Week reports that modernization programs are advancing across multiple global providers as aging systems face increasing traffic and resilience demands.

Among the infrastructure being deployed are new surveillance and surface-management technologies, including Saab-built surface movement radar equipment associated with Newark Liberty International Airport. The broader modernization effort is designed to improve information sharing and allow controllers responsible for different airspace domains to work with increasingly integrated systems.

Business aviation has a major stake in these upgrades because ATC capacity, system resilience and traffic-flow restrictions directly influence private aircraft scheduling and operational flexibility. NVOII is following the transition closely as AI moves deeper into the infrastructure behind everyday flight operations, where improvements could ultimately affect delays, routing efficiency and the ability of airspace systems to recover from disruptions.
