FAA Advanced Air Mobility Pilot Program Moves Into Real-World Operations Across the United States
The FAA’s Advanced Air Mobility integration program is moving from planning into operational demonstrations, with next-generation aircraft beginning missions intended to prove how electric, hybrid-electric, autonomous and other advanced aircraft can function within the U.S. aviation system. Eight projects spanning 26 states were selected for the initiative.

One early mission involved Beta Technologies and United Therapeutics using two Alia CX300 electric conventional-takeoff-and-landing aircraft to transport a manufactured heart approximately 275 miles from Virginia to Maryland. Other program concepts cover urban air taxis, cargo and logistics, emergency response, autonomous flight and energy-sector transportation. The significance for business aviation extends beyond eVTOLs: successful integration will require airports, air traffic systems, operators and regulators to establish procedures allowing new aircraft categories to operate safely alongside conventional business jets, turboprops and helicopters. The program is therefore becoming an important proving ground for the future structure of U.S. aviation.
