Nav Canada Raises Air Traffic Control Service Charges as Business Aviation Faces Higher Canadian Operating Costs
Nav Canada is increasing air navigation service charges, adding another operating-cost consideration for business aircraft flying within Canadian-controlled airspace.

The Canadian air navigation service provider said the higher fees are intended partly to recover financial shortfalls accumulated during the pandemic, when dramatically reduced flight activity weakened revenue across the aviation system.

Nav Canada provides air traffic control, flight information, weather briefings and other navigation services throughout Canadian airspace. Its charging structure affects operators across multiple aviation sectors, including private jets, corporate flight departments and charter companies conducting flights to, from and across Canada.

For business aviation operators, navigation charges are one component of an increasingly complex international trip-cost environment that also includes fuel, airport fees, FBO charges, handling and regulatory costs.

The increase is particularly relevant to operators conducting frequent transborder missions between Canada and the United States, as well as long-range aircraft using Canadian and North Atlantic routes.

Higher navigation charges alone are unlikely to materially alter most business jet missions, but repeated increases across fuel, handling and government services can significantly affect annual operating budgets.

The change reinforces the importance of incorporating current navigation and airspace fees into international business aviation trip planning.
