FAA Cockpit Voice Recorder Deadlines Put New Business Jets on 2027 and 2029 Compliance Timelines
The FAA has issued new guidance outlining cockpit voice recorder upgrade deadlines for newly manufactured business aircraft, giving operators and manufacturers clearer timelines for compliance with expanded recording requirements.

According to the FAA Information for Operators notice, newly manufactured turbine-powered aircraft that require two pilots and have six or more passenger seats will be subject to 25-hour cockpit voice recorder requirements. Larger newly manufactured business aircraft face a 2027 compliance deadline, while smaller turbine business aircraft covered by the rule have until 2029.

The change significantly expands the amount of cockpit audio available following an accident or serious incident. Traditional two-hour CVRs can overwrite potentially important information when an aircraft continues operating after an event—a problem aviation investigators have repeatedly highlighted.

For business aviation OEMs, operators and flight departments, the implementation timetable makes recorder capability an increasingly important consideration when accepting newly manufactured aircraft or planning avionics configurations.

Longer recording duration gives investigators a substantially greater window into crew communications and cockpit conditions preceding an event.

The requirement also reinforces a broader regulatory trend toward preserving more operational data from modern business aircraft, potentially improving investigators’ ability to identify safety issues and recommend corrective action.
