French Rafale Pilot Detects Bombardier Global 6000 Fuel Leak at 40,000 Feet, Prompting Paris Diversion
A French Air and Space Force Rafale pilot identified a fuel leak from a Bombardier Global 6000 business jet at approximately 40,000 feet, prompting the Miami-bound aircraft to abandon its transatlantic crossing and divert safely to Paris-Le Bourget Airport.

The incident occurred on August 12, 2026, while the Global 6000 was flying from Rome Ciampino to Miami. During a routine training interception, the Rafale pilot noticed an unusual trail coming from the business jet’s right wing and moved closer to investigate. The pilot reportedly detected the smell of jet fuel and alerted the Global crew to the problem.

The crew subsequently informed air traffic control and diverted to Paris-Le Bourget, one of Europe’s busiest business aviation airports, where the aircraft landed safely.

The incident demonstrates the value of visual aircraft inspection during abnormal situations, particularly before long oceanic flights where diversion options become increasingly limited.

For Bombardier Global operators and long-range business aviation crews, fuel-system integrity is especially critical because these aircraft regularly conduct missions lasting more than 10 hours across remote oceanic regions.

The unusual discovery by a military pilot may have prevented a far more serious situation developing over the Atlantic.
