Toray Joins Sora Aviation’s 30-Seat eVTOL Programme With Composite Airframe Deal
Sora Aviation has partnered with Toray Advanced Composites to support development of its S-1 eVTOL, an unusually large electric aircraft designed to carry 30 passengers. The agreement brings one of the aerospace industry’s major composite-material specialists into a programme taking a very different approach to advanced air mobility.

Toray’s advanced carbon fibre materials are expected to be used across the S-1’s primary and secondary airframe structures as well as its proprotor blades. Reducing structural weight while maintaining strength is particularly important for electric aircraft, where every kilogram directly affects battery requirements, range and overall operating efficiency.

The S-1 stands apart from most current eVTOL projects, which typically target four to six passengers. Sora is instead developing a larger aircraft with 30 passenger seats, one pilot and one cabin crew member, positioning it closer to a regional shuttle than a conventional urban air taxi.

That scale could potentially change the economics of electric vertical flight. Carrying significantly more passengers may reduce the operating cost per seat while opening opportunities for airport transfers, regional connections and high-volume routes.

For the wider advanced air mobility sector, the Toray agreement highlights another challenge beyond designing an aircraft: developing lightweight structures that can ultimately be manufactured reliably at commercial scale.
