FAA Runway Programme Cuts Incursions by Nearly 80% at Mitigated Locations
The FAA’s Runway Incursion Mitigation programme is delivering measurable safety gains, with data showing an average 78% reduction in runway incursions at locations where mitigation work has been completed. The programme focuses on airports with a history of repeated runway-incursion events and targets one of the biggest underlying risks: complex or confusing airfield geometry.

The FAA identifies high-risk intersections by analysing runway-incursion data, then works with airports and industry partners to redesign or improve problem areas. Solutions can include taxiway reconfiguration, improved signage and markings, lighting changes, hot-spot designations and revised operating procedures. In some cases, entire taxiway and runway intersections are rebuilt to reduce ambiguity for pilots and ground vehicles.

For business aviation crews, the programme is particularly relevant at busy reliever and metropolitan airports where complex taxi routes, closely spaced runways and unfamiliar layouts can increase workload. The FAA continues to emphasise careful airport-diagram review, attention to hot spots and sterile-cockpit discipline during taxi operations.

The wider significance is that runway safety improvements are increasingly being driven by airport design as well as pilot behaviour and ATC procedures.

With the FAA continuing to update its national inventory of high-risk locations, the RIM programme demonstrates that relatively targeted infrastructure changes can produce substantial reductions in surface risk.
