Textron Aviation ended the second quarter of 2026 with an $8 billion backlog, demonstrating continued demand for its Cessna Citation and Beechcraft aircraft even as production challenges weighed on deliveries.

The manufacturer delivered 40 business jets during the quarter, down from 49 a year earlier, while commercial turboprop deliveries increased to 44 aircraft from 34. Textron said lower jet output reflected manufacturing inefficiencies, supply-chain constraints and lower aircraft volume and mix, although higher pricing helped Aviation revenue rise slightly to $1.5 billion.

One of the more important issues sits behind the production numbers: workforce experience. Textron CEO Lisa Atherton said roughly half of Textron Aviation’s workforce has less than five years of experience, highlighting the challenge manufacturers face as newer employees replace retiring or more experienced aerospace workers. The company expects productivity from employees hired around 2022 to improve further in 2027.

For business aviation, the implications extend beyond Textron’s factory floor. An $8 billion backlog indicates customers are still willing to wait for new Citations and King Airs, while slower production can prolong delivery times and support demand for desirable preowned aircraft.

The workforce issue is equally significant. Building aircraft at higher rates requires more than a strong order book. OEMs need experienced technicians, production specialists and suppliers capable of converting demand into completed aircraft.

Textron’s second-quarter results therefore underline one of BizAv’s biggest current challenges: the industry has the customers, but manufacturing capacity and skilled labour will determine how quickly that demand can be fulfilled.
