FAA Moves Business Aviation IFR Clearances to Mobile Apps
The FAA is advancing Mobile Clearance, a new digital capability that will allow general and business aviation pilots to request IFR departure clearances through approved flight-planning applications rather than relying exclusively on radio calls to air traffic control.

The system is being evaluated with applications including ForeFlight and Garmin, allowing pilots to request clearance with a few taps on a phone or tablet. The FAA says more than half of roughly 44,000 IFR departure requests are still handled verbally, creating an opportunity to reduce readback errors and free controllers to focus more heavily on aircraft movement and runway safety.

Mobile Clearance is designed to operate similarly to the Pre-Departure Clearance capability already familiar to airline operations. It will also allow pilots to cancel IFR digitally through participating applications, making it easier to transition to VFR when appropriate while releasing controlled airspace more quickly.

Operational testing began around Houston in May 2026 before expanding to Appleton International and New Century AirCenter. Additional evaluations are planned in the Kansas City and Austin areas, with the FAA targeting nationwide deployment beginning in 2027.

For business aviation crews, the change could be particularly useful at busy satellite airports where clearance delivery frequencies are congested or where ground operations move quickly.

More importantly, it signals another step towards a more digital cockpit-to-ATC environment, reducing routine voice communications while bringing business aviation closer to the data-driven clearance systems already used by commercial airlines.
