FAA Finalises 5G Radio Altimeter Rule
The FAA has issued its final rule requiring aircraft radio altimeters to be capable of operating safely despite interference from 5G wireless signals in neighbouring spectrum bands. The move comes as the FCC prepares additional spectrum for future 5G services across the United States.

Radio altimeters provide precise height information above the ground and feed several critical aircraft systems, particularly during approaches and landings. Concerns emerged when 5G C-band deployment began because some older altimeters could potentially receive interference from nearby frequencies.

The new requirement establishes a longer-term solution by requiring affected aircraft to use interference-tolerant equipment rather than relying on temporary operating restrictions around airports.

For business aviation operators, the rule means reviewing aircraft equipment and planning necessary modifications within the FAA’s compliance timeline. The industry has already been working with regulators to address availability, certification and installation challenges.

With additional wireless spectrum coming into service, the rule represents an important step towards allowing aviation and expanding 5G networks to operate safely alongside one another.
