FAA Proposes New Rules for Supersonic Flight Over Land
The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a new rule that could pave the way for the return of civil supersonic flight over land by replacing the long-standing speed restriction with a performance-based noise standard.

Under the proposal, aircraft would be permitted to fly faster than the speed of sound without requiring special authorisation, provided the resulting sonic boom produces no more than 0.11 pounds per square foot of overpressure at ground level. Rather than prohibiting supersonic flight outright, the FAA is seeking to regulate its environmental impact through measurable noise limits.

The proposal is aimed at supporting the development of next-generation supersonic aircraft while protecting communities from disruptive sonic booms. Several aerospace manufacturers are currently developing high-speed aircraft capable of dramatically reducing travel times for business and commercial aviation.

If adopted, the new framework could accelerate the certification and entry into service of future supersonic aircraft, marking a significant step towards the next era of high-speed air travel.
