FAA Proposes Permanent Inspection Authorisation for Aircraft Mechanics
The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed making the Inspection Authorization (IA) a permanent rating for eligible aircraft mechanics, eliminating the current requirement for annual renewal.

Under the proposal, qualified Aviation Maintenance Technicians would retain their IA privileges without yearly renewals, provided they continue to meet ongoing currency and performance requirements. The change is intended to reduce administrative burdens while maintaining the high safety standards expected of authorised inspectors.

Inspection Authorization holders play a critical role in general and business aviation by performing annual inspections, approving major repairs and alterations and returning aircraft to service after significant maintenance work. Simplifying the certification process could help retain experienced inspectors and strengthen the aviation maintenance workforce.

The proposal forms part of the FAA’s broader effort to modernise aviation regulations while supporting an industry facing increasing demand for skilled maintenance professionals.
