FAA and FCC Introduce New Safety Measures Ahead of 5G Spectrum Auction
The Federal Aviation Administration and the Federal Communications Commission have announced new aviation safety measures ahead of the upcoming 5G spectrum auction, aimed at protecting aircraft operations from potential radio frequency interference.

Under the plan, a portion of the auction proceeds will be used to help aircraft operators replace or upgrade radio altimeter equipment that may be vulnerable to interference from future 5G services. The initiative is intended to accelerate the transition to more resilient avionics while maintaining the highest levels of flight safety.

Radio altimeters provide critical height-above-ground information used during approach, landing and low-visibility operations. Ensuring compatibility with expanding wireless communications infrastructure remains a priority for regulators and the aviation industry.

The joint announcement represents another step in the long-running effort to balance the rollout of advanced telecommunications networks with the safe operation of civil aviation.
