FAA Proposes New Noise Rule for Supersonic Flight Over Land
The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a new rule that could pave the way for the return of civil supersonic flight over land by introducing a measurable noise standard in place of the current blanket restriction.

Under the proposal, aircraft would be permitted to operate above the speed of sound without requiring special authorisation, provided the sonic boom reaching the ground does not exceed 0.11 pounds per square foot of overpressure. The performance-based approach is intended to encourage innovation while protecting communities from disruptive noise.

The proposal represents a significant step towards the next generation of supersonic aircraft, with manufacturers developing business jets capable of dramatically reducing travel times on long-distance routes. If adopted, the new framework could support certification and future commercial operations while maintaining strict environmental and public noise standards.

The move highlights the FAA’s efforts to modernise regulations as advanced aerospace technologies continue to evolve.
