New Study Calls for Greater Focus on Flight Crew Radiation Exposure
A new industry report is urging aviation regulators to take a closer look at the long-term effects of atmospheric radiation exposure on flight crews, recommending that the Federal Aviation Administration classify radiation exposure as an occupational hazard.

Flight crews are exposed to higher levels of cosmic radiation than the general population due to the altitudes at which aircraft operate. Exposure can increase further on long-haul flights and routes that operate near polar regions, where Earth’s magnetic protection is reduced.

The study recommends enhanced measurement, monitoring and education programmes to help crews better understand potential exposure risks throughout their careers. Advocates also argue that more consistent tracking could improve awareness and support future health research.

As business aviation continues operating increasingly long-range missions, the discussion highlights a growing focus on crew wellbeing, occupational health and risk management. The findings may prompt renewed debate about how radiation exposure is monitored and addressed across the broader aviation industry.
