FAA Limits Scope of New 25-Hour Cockpit Voice Recorder Requirements for Existing BizAv Fleets
The Federal Aviation Administration has stopped short of mandating widespread retrofits for 25 hour cockpit voice recorders across existing business aviation fleets, easing concerns among operators over large scale upgrade costs.

According to guidance highlighted by the National Business Aviation Association, the updated rule primarily applies to newly manufactured aircraft rather than imposing broad retrofit requirements on aircraft already in service.

The rule aligns with ongoing industry efforts to improve accident investigation capability by extending cockpit audio recording duration beyond older two hour standards. However, limiting retrofit obligations reduces the immediate operational and financial impact on existing operators and fleet owners.

For business aviation operators, the decision provides greater flexibility while still supporting gradual adoption of updated safety technologies as newer aircraft enter service.
